Preliminary Task: Our final piece

Evaluation of film:

We were asked to create a short film where a character walks into a room and exchanges dialogue with the other character. We were asked to use skills like the 180 degree rule and match on action, for this we used many camera angles, shots and movements to convey what are video was about and the skills it had in it.

During post production we created a script where our colleagues would exchange dialogue in ways how we wanted them too and used many directorial techniques to get the best out of our actors. The script wasn't difficult to create as it is very short, therefore was easy for us to direct them how to exchange it. We created 12 story boards about each shot we will take and use in our short film, this involved a number of shots, angles and movements. It also included location and how many actors will be in the scene. We used a story board making website to create our shots and can be found further down the blog. We had to get the actors which was difficult because we got actors but one of them obtained tonsillitis which meant all the filming we had done had to be abandoned and we had to do it again, but that wasn't a strong matter as we had another colleague to help us. Our location planning was also very easy and good as it was close and we only needed a piano so we used our school's music room.

During main production we had no difficulties creating our film, we had a lot of fun and got the stuff we needed. As I stated in the previous paragraph is that we had an actor who had tonsillitis so we had to re film with a new actor and that session actually took up to 50 minutes which caused us a lot of continuity problems as everything just wasn't in order and was filmed at different times so bits of the film may still be under continuity error. This caused us to change rooms into something larger, which is what we originally planned to do but was being used before. We had a lot of background noise and had to edit it out which brought some of my skills in. If me and Sean had more time on this we could create something really incredible and we can't wait to do the main tasks which is creating a horror trailer.

Editing the film took a long time, I assisted my co partner Sean Welsh with the video editing using adobe premiere pro as I had some previous experience with it, we had some problems with the audio not syncing correctly, so Sean sorted that out. We had several continuity errors because of a missing actor we had to replace due to them having tonsillitis, so we attempted to do the best we can to edit and put it in the correct order so it makes sense. Most noticeable of a continuity error is when there are different clothing. Sean and I were able to produce an image and then add a Chroma key ( green screen)  which gave you the rain effect, this saved us time, this also means that our establishing shot was secured before any filming. The aspect ratio didn't end well and it had to black lines going down the side of the video, leaving it unprofessional so we re sized it and got it correct. Other than all the negative we believe we did the best we could for our editing despite having all those problems.

In this conclusion, I believe the preliminary task went exceptionally well and we had fun whilst creating it, however we probably missed the main design brief and this wouldn't actually count as a conversation because we couldn't stick to one actor. However we did show some type of evidence using the 180 degree rule and match on action. We have many strengths such as our directing and editing, but our weakness is continuity, next time we film everything in the right order so we don't mess anything up for the edits. Overall the task went well, could of been better but I can't wait to get started on the main task because I believe me and Sean can produce better content.

  1. I think you are correct to identify that your completed PT does not meet the expectations of the set brief as well as it could have done. The absence of any sort of shot-res verse shot during the exchange of dialogue between two characters is an obvious weakness which you have identified accurately.

As I have said previously, my thought is that your enthusiasm is more of a hindrance than a help at present and you need to master basic skills before then allowing your creativity and ideas to flow more freely. You should really have approached this task in a simpler way and I think that this would have helped you to achieve a nor effective result. However, every day is a school day and I hope that you learn something from the problems you have encountered here which ultimately helps you to produce a successful film opening for your main task.

Can you tell me which part of the work undertaken for the Preliminary Task you enjoyed most, which you enjoyed least and, in both cases, why?

    1. I believe I enjoyed the filming and editing part of the task, this is because I had a lot of fun and I thought it was my time to be creative. The filming , we had a good laugh but we got the work done in the minimal amount of time which we had last minute. I enjoyed the editing aspect because I've always edited and I just find it interesting and fun when linking music with video, or video with music, I also like how I can control the way the video comes out. However I didn't enjoy pre production despite it being essential, it just doesn't appeal to me as much as doing the practical elements. This is because I'm more 'get on with it' however after watching many behind the scenes of movies I know that they are in pre production for years, sorting all sorts to eventually go on to main production. So it's important to have an idea before you actually start filming however it's not as practical as I wished it to be.
